By the end of this lesson: you will select the feeding method that matches your system.
Pocket Feeding:
This means burying a modest amount in one area. It makes inspection easy and gives worms somewhere else to retreat if the feed heats, ferments or becomes acidic. Rotate pockets around the bin and if you have more than one bin stick with the corner location for all of the bins and rotate them all at the same time.
Trench Feeding:
This is similar but uses a longer narrow strip, useful in broad bins. It can give the corners of a bin a much needed break from food but I would suggest not running this all the way along the width of the bin. If it does go sour then you are diving your biomass of worms.
This isn’t a method we use often at all.
Surface Feeding:
Surface feeding is quick and suitable for fine worm chow or pre-composted material, but exposed kitchen scraps attract flies and dry out.
Cover surface feeds with bedding, to help reduce pests.
For beginners moving into Farmer Level, pocket feeding remains the strongest default. It creates clear evidence: either the pocket was processed or it was not.
