By the end of this lesson: you will have a basic understanding into what a DIY wormery could be.

DIY wormery’s can be excellent, especially if you like building things and have the skills for it. 

The key points are drainage, ventilation, a secure lid, darkness and safe materials.

Avoid anything that has held chemicals or anything that might leach something unpleasant into the bedding as the worms take things in via their skin.

Remember, the worms do not care if the system looks fancy. They care whether it is dark, damp, breathable and safe.

We’ve seen a host of people make these, lining them and making them out of wood.  We think much of this is based on where it’s going to live and what the weather is like.

Ours would be indoors but if you lived somewhere like South Africa then you can me sure the weather will be drier than in the UK.  Here in England it can get a bit wet and then freeze and then be hot so perhaps wood may not be ideal.  Also, metal ones in heat could make it a bit nasty for your poor worms as they cook.

Top Tip – Use premade ones to start with and only experiment with this when you have stable setups and know you won’t be buying more worms each month.  The weather really matters.
