By the end of this lesson: you will understand when a flow-through system becomes worthwhile.

A flow-through system is fed from the top and harvested from the bottom. It can be excellent for larger, continuous processing because the active worms remain near fresh material while older castings settle below.

The concept is simple, but poor construction can cause bridging, drying, compaction or worms falling into the harvesting zone. These systems also make more sense when there is a steady supply of feed and bedding. A large flow-through unit fed irregularly is just an expensive container.

At Farmer Level, the aim is to understand the system and decide whether it fits. Building high-output commercial equipment belongs later. Start with a proven design or a small test system rather than inventing a giant machine on day one.
