Stocking advice is often presented as one exact weight per square foot or one fixed feeding percentage. Those figures ignore depth, airflow, temperature, food type and the maturity of the bedding. Treat them as rough planning ideas, not hard rules.

Buying more worms saves time, but it does not replace good management.

A new bin should be stocked conservatively and allowed to establish. Capacity can then increase as bedding matures and feed disappears reliably. Signs that the population is using the space well include worms spread through the active layer, steady food processing and healthy cocoons or juveniles.

Possible overcrowding signs include dense clusters with little usable bedding, repeated migration, stalled reproduction, rapid food competition and a system that becomes difficult to keep aerated. These signs can also be caused by poor conditions, so diagnose the habitat before blaming the headcount.

Composting worms can reproduce quickly in positive conditions. But real life has limits: food, space, temperature, moisture and bedding all matter. The sensible goal is not to chase wild population numbers specifically. The goal is to create a stable system where worms are active, cocoons appear, young worms survive, and the bin processes food steadily.

  • 250g: suitable for a very small starter, slower to establish.
  • 500g: a strong beginner amount for many home systems.
  • 1kg: useful for larger stacking wormeries or faster establishment.
  • More than 1kg: only when space, bedding and feedstock are ready.
